STORY
Almost a decade ago, Vina DGO had been trying to get back into the corporate workforce for months with no success. She had two young children and childcare was outrageously expensive, so she started baking cupcakes. She named her business 'Brye Cupcakes'.
She put all her zeal and effort into her new-found cupcake business, designed her website, social media platforms, business cards and flyers and started selling them online and at the Laurel farmer's market. Vina had always had a passion for baking cakes, which she inherited from her mom but she wanted to bake cupcakes that were different. She wanted cupcakes that were absolutely moist and delicious cupcakes but weren't packed with a boatload of sugar.
Her cupcakes were received very warmly in the Laurel, Maryland community and within that same year in November, her business was one of six, that were selected by one of Vina's avid supporters, Maureen Rogers (Laurel Board of Trade), to be featured on Verizon Fios Channel 42 & Comcast Channel 76, as well as the Baltimore Sun for the former Maryland Comptroller, Peter Franchot & former Laurel Mayor, Craig Moe's visit to the Laurel Mill Playhouse, in support of small business owners. To say Vina was thrilled, is an understatement. She started pursuing a retail storefront on Main Street and found a small location, which was a perfect fit. However, as
she was getting ready to sign the lease, she and her husband discovered that she was pregnant and that it would be a difficult, high-risk pregnancy. Vina was shocked and devastated that her dreams of a cupcake shop had come to a crashing halt. She fell in love with her newborn, who thankfully was delivered safely and settled into motherhood life all over again. When her son was 3 years old, she tried to start up again but it was immensely difficult with three young children all under the age of 10. So she gave up on her dream of owning a brick and mortar cupcake shop, ever becoming a reality.
Years passed and though Vina still held that dream in her heart of owning a retail cupcake business, she felt like, she was getting older, it was expensive and no longer possible for her. Her best friend and some of her previous customers would call randomly and try to persuade her to start the business again but she would decline; feeling like it was an impossible feat.
Until one day last year, feeling discouraged, deeply pensive and mulling over regrets, she had an epiphany. She prayed and then made a brave decision that being a mom, should not equate to giving up on your dreams. She kept telling herself that with GOD, all things were possible and as long as she had life, it was never too late to start again. She had a dream that felt like GOD encouraging her to be bold and go after her dream. That same week, she registered the business in Maryland, bought a domain name, designed her website, commenced her business plan, found a realtor and started looking online for affordable retail space. Thus Brye Cupcakes was reborn and JBRYE CUPCAKES was founded.
